The Defenders of Marvel comics (distinct from the street level heroes of the netflix show) have alway been a randomly ragtag overpowered grouping of clashing personalities and histories. This new iteration, outsiders brought together and defined in story by a magical tarot deck but in reality by the team of Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez continue the tradition. As each issue/chapter highlights one character from the team, from movie famous Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer to lesser published Masked Raider or Cloud they journey back through Marvel universes centred on cosmic adventure, dark magic and abstractions. Each new reality is an option for Rodriguez to show off anew and his skills as a colourist get a particular highlight in later chapters without ever getting in the way of clear and purposeful storytelling. Heavy in lore but never weighed down by it this is superheroics at its most vivid.
