Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) wrote for "Weird Tales" magazine in the golden age of weird pulp fiction. He corresponded extensively with other famous weird fiction authors included Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft. In addition to offering critique and commentary on Lovecraft's writing, Smith collaborated with Lovecraft on expanding Lovecraft's most well known creation, the Cthulhu mythos. In gratitude, Lovecraft made references in several of his stories to an Atlantean priest named "Klarkash-Ton" as a tribute to his friend.

In addition to writing weird fiction for pulp magazines, Smithw as a poet, painter, sculpter and artist.

"Mother of Toads" is a short story by Clark Ashton Smith. It was originally featured in the July 1938 edition of Weird Tales magazine.
