What if, instead of appearing in the pages of 1930s American newspapers, the characters Nancy and Sluggo had grown up in a 1980s video store, sandwiched between Freddy Krueger and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? In this small collection of drawings, Lucas Varela orchestrates an unlikely encounter between the candid, minimalist comic strip style of Ernie Bushmiller and iconic scenes from fantasy and horror cinema. The cartoonish style and naivety of the characters clash with the gory imagery of Carrie, Psycho, The Shining, and Get Out.

The result: a gleefully dark humor, where innocence rubs shoulders with gore with disconcerting composure.
