By Danielle Chenette
Chenette’s latest touches on big themes, such as the function of myth, intergenerational dynamics, and the role of guns in the construction of masculinity, all shot through her charming lo-fi aesthetic that manages to imbue the undertaking with some welcome levity in the process.
“Her work is satisfyingly lo-fi, whether it’s made in felt tip, coloured pencil or watercolour, lending the scenes she creates the action-filled dynamic of a film still or a storyboard.”
-Maisie Skidmore (It’s Nice That, 2014)
“The comics of Danielle Chenette are a sports car riding into a blazing sunset under the shadow of tall palms. They are an action scene that you vaguely remember from a movie you haven’t seen since you were 12. Few contemporary cartoonists use movement as loose and fierce as she does.”
-Krystal DiFronzo (Bad At Sports, 2017)
“Chenette’s cartooning has a gestural, carefree affect, more concerned with the course of a line than the form it means to represent....there’s a freedom to the work which I found refreshing.”
-Alex Hoffman (Sequential State, 2017)
