The Gosh! Authority 04.10.23
Hello, and welcome to October!
Last Sunday saw the estate sale of Kevin O'Neill's personal book collection, and we had a full house as people managed to get themselves some keepsakes and help support Kevin's Estate. But if you missed it (and we know many did thanks to the train strikes and the clash with the Lakes festival), then fear not. We still have plenty of Kev's books that we'll feed out to boxes on our upstairs benches over the coming weeks, so make sure you pop by - and keep popping by - to see what you can find!
As I mentioned last week, we're launching an all-new newsletter this week dedicated to our best and latest offerings from small press producers and independent publishers. You'll get the first email later this week if you're already on our newsletter mailing list, but if not and that sounds like just the thing for you, click here to subscribe.
This week sees those errant DC books from last week coming through. Pretty small otherwise, but the top two books this week have me on the horns of a dilemma. Two pretty major releases, but ultimately Daniel Warren Johnson is going to win the day for me, even despite my personal lack of interest in the kids from Cybertron.
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- TRANSFORMERS #1 - Massive fan of Habro's shape-shifting robots? Image have got you sorted with a high-profile relaunch from one of comics' most exciting, dynamic talents as a part of their new Energon universe. Not really bothered about the Transformers? Image have got you sorted with this action-packed sci-fi tale by one of comics' most exciting, dynamic talents as a part of a wider line of titles you don't need to follow (unless you fancy it). I'm in camp #2, and - given DWJ is one of my faves - am very excited to be so.
- G.O.D.S. #1 - On the other hand, I'm also a big Jonathan Hickman fan, so while it pains me a little to put his biggest new project since HoX/PoX at second spot, it's only by a whisker. Hickman teams up with Valerio Schiti to do with the Marvel cosmos what he did with Marvel's mutants. It's a "forget everything you know" kind of project, so jump on this bumpoer sized first issue for the ride.
- BATMAN CATWOMAN GOTHAM WAR RED HOOD #1 - Everyone's favourite sidekick-who-was-murdered-but-then-resurrected-as-an-antihero-taking-on-the-mantle-of-a-classic-villain gets embroiled in the Gotham War, and he's firmly in the Catwoman camp. Matthew Rosenberg & Nikola Čižmešija handle this two-parter.
- POWER GIRL #1 - Leah Williams & Eduardo Pansica kick off the new Power Girl series, as PG - now going by the name "Paige" and feeling more comfortable with her Kryptonian family in this universe - takes on a threat from Krypton's past.
- DC's GHOULS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN #1 - DC are back with their seasonal horror one-shot, as a host of characters find themselves in spooky situations for Halloween. Man-Bat fighting a werewolf is a decent enough entry ticket for me.
- THE MIDNITE SHOW #1 - Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt break out some Halloween fun themselves, with this tale of a legendary lost film, classic monsters, and ragtag misfits fighting to save a slice of small-town America.
And that's it for this week, chums! See you next time!
Andrew.
