The Gosh! Authority 07.09.22

Hello!

Andrew here, back from holiday. Big thanks to Paul for filling in for me, I'm sure you'll see him around here again soon. In the meantime, we're leading off with a bit of sad event news this week: due to logistical issues we've had to cancel this coming Saturday's Newburn TP signing with Jacob Phillips. We're hoping to organise something else with Jacob in the very near future, so keep your eyes peeled.

And in more sad news, if you're in this week be sure to say goodbye to Olive, who is leaving us at the end of this week for the promised land of publishing. She's going to kill it over there for sure, and will be sorely missed by us!

Okay, enough doom and gloom, let's talk comics!

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • BATMAN DEAR DETECTIVE #1 - Curious project this one. Lee Bermejo's variant covers on the Mariko Tamaki run of Detective Comics were much-loved, but it turns out he had bigger plands for them all along. From the outset he intended that once the run was done, the images could all be connected together to form a narrative about Batman's hunt for a serial killer who taunts him with a series of letters. The end result is this one-shot, which acts as both a gripping story and great showcase for Bermejo's moody, detailed work.

  • LUDA HC - The debut novel of the one and only Grant Morrison! Luci is a drag queen who feels the end of her prime is fast approaching. She takes on a young protégée, Luda, teaching her the Glamour, a mystical discipline involving sex, drugs and ritual. But soon the people around Luci start to die in mysterious ways, leading her to wonder if perhaps Luda might have sinister designs. Sounds like pretty classic GM to me!

  • ALL-OUT AVENGERS #1 - Derek Landy and Greg Land launch a new Avengers title where each issue drops you right into the middle of the action and resolves itself by the final page. Sounds like a nicely accessible book, with shifting rosters and varied stakes in each story.

  • ALIEN #1 - Phillip Kennedy Johnson relaunches the Alien title with new artist Julius Ohta, giving us a new view on the universe of Alien (Alienverse?) A hidden colony of synths must decide whether they can work with humans after being approached about helping to retrieve a mysterious item of biotechnology. I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark here about what that might be. Ready? ALIENS!

  • BATMAN KNIGHTWATCH #1 - Retailers around the world breathe a sigh of relief as DC launch a new Bat-book that's aimed at kids, helping us to answer the question "Is there a Batman comic suitable for my 8 year old?" Each issue features various members of the Bat-family taking on the villains of Gotham, by J Torres and Erich Owen.

  • DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL TALES FROM THE THREE KINGDOMS #1 - Happy news, DKoS fans! To help tide you over the short hiatus until the main series returns in November, Tom Taylor has teamed up with Jay Kristoff, C.S. Pacat, Caspar Wijngaard, Michele Bandini & Sean Izaakse for some flashback fun.

  • ANTIOCH #1 - Frontiersman creators Patrick Kindlon and Marco Ferrari reteams for this environmentalist superhero tale as the ruler of a lost kingdom takes on mankind in order to save the planet.

And that's me done! See you again next week!

Andrew.
