The Gosh! Authority 09.03.22
Hello!
Why yes, I have seen The Batman, and yes I rather enjoyed it. A luxuriously gloomy 3 hours with some fun gags in there. Sure, it's not perfect, but I think we can all agree it'll be better than Morbius, right? Anyway, not much else to say, so let's get into it!
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- CAPTAIN CARTER #1 - Gosh fave Jamie McKelvie - acclaimed artist and influential designer - hits the keyboard this time around, teaming up with artist Marika Cresta to tell all-new tales from the universe where Peggy Carter was the one who got the supersoldier serum (as seen in the Disney+ What If series). Now she's a woman lost in time, thawed out in the modern age after her apparent demise at the end of WWII. This should be a lot of fun (and old Marvel UK fans should expect some familiar faces...).
- LITTLE MONSTERS #1 - One-man comics industry Jeff Lemire is at it again, writing a band new series with frequent collaborator Dustin Nguyen, who sticks to a black, white and red pallete that has the book dripping with atmosphere. It's a kind of post-apocalyptic Lost Boys, as we join a cast of child vampires living and playing amidst the ruins of humankind. But their carefree existence is going to change forever thanks to a mysterious new arrival!
- PUNISHER #1 - Frank is back! But maybe not as you know him. Jason Aaron, Jesus Saiz and Paul Azaceta begin an all-new era for the Punisher as he finds himself at the head of assassin clan The Hand. Listen, for a character that has been an angel of vengeance and a Frankenstein's monster (god I loved Frankencastle), heading a clan of supernatural ninjas feels like a pretty modest stretch. Oh, and he has a new logo. First appearance!
- TRIAL OF THE AMAZONS #1 - A Wonder-event begins here as Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl and Nubia become embroiled in a power struggle over Themyscira after the events of Nubia & the Amazons #6. A trial by combat must take place to decide which of the Amazon tribes will rule, but can they decide in time to stop the rise of an ancient evil (how many ancient evils are there???)? Only Becky Cloonan, Vita Ayala, Michael Conrad, Stephanie Williams, Joëlle Jones, Elena Casagrande, Laura Braga & Skylar Patridge know!
- SPIDER-GWEN: GWENVERSE #1 - The Gwen Stacey of Earth-65 is back, tumbling through dimensions to meet herself in the guise of alternate heroes. Iron Gwen! Gwenverine! Captain Gwenmerica! Dead Gwen! Well, maybe not her. Tim Seeley & Jodi Nishijima unleash a What If styled IP goldmine!
- STAR WARS HAN SOLO & CHEWBACCA #1 - Set several years before A New Hope, Han & Chewie take on an ill-fated job for Jabba the Hutt in this all-new story by Marc Guggenheim & David Messina. And you know what? I liked the Solo film. Quite a lot actually. Sure, it had its flaws, but as a not-particularly-bothered-but-I'll-watch-them Star Wars consumer, I thought it was a ton of fun. Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest. So...uhh...read the comic.
- NAOMI SEASON 2 #1 - With the tv series well underway as we speak, DC figured it might be time to bring back Naomi McDuffie in the second arc of her solo series (though of course she's been doing the business as Powerhouse over in the Justice League). Co-writers Brian Michael Bendis and David Walker are back along with artist Jamal Campbell for an all-new 6-issue series that continues to explore her place in the DCU.
- DEVIL’S REIGN MOON KNIGHT #1 - With his own streaming show about to drop and a new ongoing that's selling like hotcakes, seems sensible to drop a little MK into the Devils Reign event with this one-shot. Marc Spector has been swept up in Wilson Fisk's hero crackdown, and languishes in prison. It's up to Jed McKay and Federico Sabbatini to bust him out!
- RADIANT RED #1 - The Radiant Black superhero universe expands again, this time looking into the world of ex-supervillain Radiant Red. Satomi Sone has left the villainous life behind, but will she be able to enjoy a quiet life as a soon-to-be-married middle-grade teacher? And has her past actually left her behind? Read it and find out! Except Kyle Higgins & Marcelo Costa don't need to read it, because they made it!
- WE LIVE AGE OF THE PALLADIONS #1 BLACK & WHITE EDITIONS - Return with The Miranda Brothers to the world of We LIve. We rejoin them six years after the events of the first series, but with an unusual twist. Two new #1 issues, each of which presents a different perspective on the story as the remnants of humanity struggle for survival.
- WOMEN OF MARVEL #1 - The latest themed anthology one-shot celebrating the women of Marvel, both on the page and behind it. A great line-up of talent including Jordie Bellaire, Rhianna Pratchett, Charlie Jane Anders, Preeti Chhibber, Mirka Andolfo, Marguerite Sauvage, Jen Bartel and local rising star Zoe Thorogood!
And that's it! See you next week, boppers!
