HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES RITE OF SPRING #1 - The cuddliest serial killer in the land returns, as Patrick Horvath delivers a sequel to his immensely enjoyable cosy horror tale. Nearly a decade on from the events of the first series the world is entering a new information age, and a family on the search for justice is closing in on Samantha and the town of Woodbrook.
- FANTASTIC FOUR #1 - Just in time for the movie, it's a shiny relaunch for Marvel's First Family! Kind of a relaunch, anyway: Ryan North is still at the writing helm, so there's some welcome continuity there, and he's joined by the one and only Humberto Ramos on art! It's a perfect time to jump on, as the FF are flung through time and stranded at various points in history. The headline is: Thing vs dinosaurs!
- FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST STEPS #1 - And speaking of the movie, how about an in-universe one-shot that tells the origin story of our brave heroes just as it happened a mere 4 years ago? It'll take superstars like Matt Fraction and Mark Buckingham to do something like that justice!
- WILD ANIMALS #1 - Ed Brisson return to the crime genre, where he always turns in his best work. Along with artist Andy Kuhn, Brisson dips into the sticky morass of vengeance, where good ideas are corrupted, and bad ideas only make things worse. Neil's father died at the hands of police 15 years ago, and his mother now lies on her deathbed. He's pushed into a corner, and with nothing left to lose he's got nothing to do but hit back.
- UNCHOSEN #1 - A new sci-fi series written and drawn by Marvel superstar David Marquez. A young woman awakes amidst devastation that she has caused, but with no idea of the nature or origins of her powers, or the intentions of the two factions that are pursuing her.
- PREDATOR BLACK WHITE & BLOOD #1 - The usual blood-spattered black, white and red anthology business, with stories this issue by Joe Kelly, Álvaro López, Eliot Rahal, Brian Level, Sarah Gailey and Fran Galán.
- MARVEL SWIMSUIT SPECIAL FRIENDS, FOES AND RIVALS #1 - We haven't seen one of these in a while! Bask in the balmy days of summer along with the Marvel crew, as the Wasp releases an official swimsuit special to combat Roxxon Comics' unauthorised one. Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs write the framing story that unleashes 40 pages of speedos and bikinis. When something like this happens, I'm always brought to mind the Gold Digger swimsuit special where a guest Japanese artist, when presumbly asked to draw a sexy anthropomorphic porpose in a swimsuit, drew a decidedly non-anthropomorphic beached porpoise with a bikini wrapped around it. Absolute gold.
- RETURN TO SKULL ISLAND #1 - A spinoff from the Skull Island animated series from Netflix by Simon Furman and Chris Jones. A group of castaways hide behind Kong as he kicks the snot out of a variety of Skull Island beasties.
And that's me for another week! See you next time!
Andrew.
