The Gosh! Authority 09.08.23
Hello!
This Friday, 7-9pm, sees the launch party for Emilia McKenzie's new book, But You Have Friends. We're massive fans of Emilia's psychedelic sci-fi comics she makes under the pen name Emix Regulus, but this is a far more personal work which shows her versatility and range in dealing with some pretty tough subject matter. You can get the details here.
Before that, though, we have a latest installment of Reads, the graphic novel reading group. The group will be meeting on Wednesday, 7-9pm, to discuss the Poison Ivy Virtuous Cycle hardcover, and all interested parties are welcome! Get the details here.
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- THE ENFIELD GANG MASSACRE #1 - Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips present a 150 year prequel to That Texas Blood as we head back to the formative years of Ambrose County, Texas. An aging Texas Ranger is fighting to establish the rule of law in Ambrose. His main obstacle are the Enfield gang, a group of outlaws led by Montgomery Enfield who aren't quite ready to lay down their guns. You kinda know what you're getting here, and in this case that's no bad thing as Condon and Phillips expand their...uhh...Ambroseverse?
- DWELLINGS #1 - Small press watchers may have seen the slick stylings of Jay Stephens' Dwellings before, as published by Black Eye Books. Now Oni have picked the series up as a three-part, prestige format mini so if you didn't catch this the first time around now's your chance. Gruesome small-town horror meets Harvey Comics cuteness in this collection of spooky tales involving the inhabitants of Elwich, an all-American town with dark secrets behind every door.
- CHILDREN OF THE VAULT #1 - Deniz Camp and Luca Maresca stake out the next step in the Fall of X as the super-evolved Children of the Vault take centre stage. But what price are they willing to pay to bring about their utopian vision for humanity's future, and where do Bishop and Cable fit into it all? I'm enjoying the Fall of X ride so far, and loved the Children of the Vault concept that Hickman introduced. Let's see what Camp and Maresca make of it!
- THE MADNESS #1 - J. Michael Straczynski teams up with artist ACO for this tale of a super-thief who robs the wrong target, instigating a goverment-sanctioned hit being put out on her. Pursued by the nation's on-the-books superheroes, she manages to escape an attack that wipes out her family. Time for some revenge, aided by her not-so-imaginary friend.
- GHOST RIDER WOLVERINE WEAPONS OF VENGEANCE #1 - Flamehead and Clawhands team up for a cross-title crossover that kicks off here thanks to Benjamin Percy and Geoff Shaw. When a demonic serial killer starts targeting young mutants (presumably pre-Hellfire Gala), Logan and Johnny Blaze's interests converge, especially as the killer has some kind of connecting to their frst ever meeting.
- ARCA GN - Gosh fave Jesse Lonergan and writer Van Jensen team up for a dystopian, politically charged graphic novel. In a distant future, a small group of the ultra-wealthy have fled a failing Earth on a ship bound for a distant, habitable world. Their servants are teenagers, lured on board the escape ships by the promise of a better life at the end of their journey. But - and you may be surprised to hear this - the billionaires aren't necessarily going to hold up to their side of the bargain.
- SCARLETT COUTURE THE MUNICH FILE #1 - Des Taylor's super-spy returns, developing on the events of her previous series and all illustrated in Taylor's lovely style that blends a bright, clean animators polish with the linework of classic pinup artists.
And that's it for this week! See you next time, boppers!
Andrew.
