The Gosh! Authority 11.10.23
Hello!
This Saturday, 1-2pm, we'll have the trio of Ramzee, Senar Koraltan & Shane Melisse here to sign copies of their new sci-fi action tale, Speed Switch! Come on down and pick up a signed copy of this indie gem. Details here.
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- BATMAN CITY OF MADNESS #1 - Gosh! fave Christian Ward writes and draws this slice of Bat-centric cosmic horror. The Court of Owls has long hidden a secret, twisted Gotham that lies far below the one we know, a Gotham which contains twisted versions of the above-ground city's inhabitants, including the Dark Knight himself. And when those denizens break free, Batman has to join with the Court to stop the nightmare versions of himself and his rogue's gallery from making his Gotham their own. It takes a lot for me to get stuck into a Batman story, if I'm honest, but this sounds right up my street (and just in time for Halloween!)
- WESLEY DODDS THE SANDMAN #1 - Spinning out of the pages of JSA, Robert Venditti & Riley Rossmo tell a tale of the original Sandman, a pacifist crimefighter who has spent many years perfecting a knockout gas to take out his enemies. But when his early, more deadly, versions of the gas are stolen, he's on the case to find the theives! Love a bit of Wesley Dodds: if you've never reads the 90's Sandman Mystery Theatre series, you should definitely attempt to correct that.
- NIGHT AND DANA GN - A new book from Anya Davidson is always cause for celebration at Gosh Towers. This time she's going the YA route, with a coming of age tale about a young woman finding her own voice as she drifts apart from her best friend during the production of a student-made eco-horror
- CAPWOLF AND THE HOWLING COMMANDOS #1 - Okay, so the concept is almost always better than the execution, but CapWolf remains one of the best bananas ideas of the 90s. This time we're dialling it back to WWII, where Steve gets his wolf on and fights Nazis with the Howling Commandos (geddit?). Stephanie Phillips and Carlos Magno are on this, and honestly, if this doesn't finish with all the Howling Commandos transformed into werewolves, I'm going to be very disappointed.
- SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN RETURNS #1 - Dan Slott and Christos Gage celebrate 10 years of the Superior Spider-Man with artists Ryan Stegman, Mark Bagley, Humberto Ramos & Giuseppe Camuncoli. It's a one-shot tale of one of the most entertaining eras of Spider-Man (when Otto Octavius was in the driving seat of Peter Parker's body. (It's a long story.)) Sure to be a fun ride.
- OPERATION SUNSHINE #1 - Marcus Parks & Henry Zebrowski (from the Last Podcast on the Left) and the ever-amazing David Rubín team up for this vampire heist series. We're introduced to a whole world of monsters (and monster hunters) as a group of disillusioned young vamps decide to regain their humaity by stealing a magical object from the most ancient vampires.
- ZOMVIKINGS #1 - Speaking of fun rides, Vikings get zombie-fied in this new series by Rodolfo Santullo & Jok (NOT Jock, but still a very good artist in his own right). It's an historical horror comedy as Viking raiders get a bit more than they bargained for.
- SPACE USAGI YOKAI HUNTER #1 - I know I plugged Stan Sakai a couple of weeks back, but here's a perfect opportunity to do so again, and you bet I'll take it. Space Usagi has always been a bit of a curio: Sakai's samurai rabbit transposed into a sci-fi setting featuring a descendant of Miyamoto Usagi. In this new one-shot, we get a tale of classic Usagi that then plays into a futuristic sci-fi story.
- NIGHTS #1 - In an alternate history America, with 31 states and a supernatural population mingling with us normies, Vince is a typical young man. His parents are dead, his roomate (and cousin) is a mercenary, and his new BFF is a self-styled "best vampire who ever lived". I don't have a lot of info on this title, but I like the cut of its "anything goes" jib.
- MIDLIFE #1 - A desk jockey firefighter discovers he is immune to fire, kicking off a middle-aged superhero career (on top of a new baby on the way with his new wife). Brian Buccellato & Stefano Simeone kick off their new down-to-earth super-powered series.
- CAPTAIN MARVEL ASSAULT ON EDEN #1 - A new reader friendly one-shot by Anthony Oliveira & Eleonora Carlini, bringing some old-fashioned superheroics to tie in with the release of The Marvels.
And that's your lot this week, comic fans!
Andrew.
