The Gosh! Authority 12.05.25
Hello!
Two events for you this week! First up this Wednesday, 7-9pm, we have Reads, the graphic novel reading group, where all eyes will be on Catwoman: Trail of the Catwoman, the recent Compact Edition of Darwyn Cooke and Ed Brubaker's Catwoman collaboration. All are welcome, come on down! Details here.
And then on Saturday, 1-2pm, Senar Koraltan and Shane Melisse will be here to sign copies of their new issue of cyber-punk thriller Speed Switch! Details here.
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE BATTLE BEAST #1 - I remember reading Invincible back in the day and being totally blindsided by Battle Beast, at first a seemingly ordinary member of another group of super-villains who is quickly revealed as anything but. Hell, I even had a Battle Beast t-shirt at one point. Well, the time has come for Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley to spin an untold tale of the most dangerous creature in the universe. Expect bucketloads of blood, and maybe even a little pathos.
- SUPERGIRL #1 - A new era for Supergirl courtesy of Sophie Campbell, both as writer and artist. Kara returns to Midvale, her Earthly hometown, only to discover that the town is already protected by, uhh, Supergirl. It's a battle of the Supergirls in what promises to be a fun, character-driven series.
- EXQUISITE CORPSES #1 - Imagine an annual competition arranged by the world's wealthiest: twelve deadly killers, one Halloween night, one innocent town, one winner left standing, and a LOT of collateral damage. That's the setup for this new 13 issue series by James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh with a changing roster of artists each issue.
- HUCK BIG BAD WORLD #1 - Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque return to the world of super Samaritan Huck, an unusually pure-hearted protagonist for Millar. Life has settled for Huck after his outing, but now it's revealed to him that he and his mother are not the onloy super-powered beings out there. Time to hit the road.
- GWENPOOL #1 - The return of Gwenpool thanks to Cavan Scott and Stefano Nesi, but she's gone all 90's on us, embracing a dark and gritty vibe. I guess that's thanks to the move to NYC, lopping heads off and such. Still, with Fin Fang Foom and Jeff the Shark making appearances, I'm guessing tongue is firmly in cheek here.
- DARK REGARDS #1 - A series springboarding from writer Dave Hill's creation of satirical Norwegian extreme black metal band Witch Taint (a band that began as a series of joke emails with a black metal record label and grew into a real musical project). Hill imagines an alternative history for Witch Taint, where the Norwegian black metal world is so incencsed by Witch Taint's dismissal of their talent, that the darkest, most dangerous black metal practitioners make their way to Indiana to exact revenge. Hill is joined by artist Artyom Topilin.
- VANISHING POINT #1 - This actually came last week and I missed it! A new sci-fi horror anthology series by Mark Russell with a changing cast of artists on each single-issue story. First up is Juan Doe, who joins Russell for a story about a space miner who makes a terrible discovery in the asteroid belt around Jupiter.
- SPIDER-VERSE VS VENOMVERSE #1 - I'm not sure why one is hyphenated and one isn't, but I'm not going to dwell on it. It's time for a Royal Rumble as both multiversal rosters choose champions to fight for their continued existence. Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom and Luciano Vecchio have got ALL the toys out of the toybox on this one.
And that's me done, folks! See you next week!
Andrew.
