The Gosh! Authority 12.07.23
Hello!
It's Reads time again, and this month the monthly graphic novel reading group is taking on Sammy Harkham's masterpiece Bood of the Virgin. All are welcome, so if you fancy discussing a book that is a shoo-in for our best of the year list then come on down for 7-9pm, Wednesday the 12th. Details here.
Bit of a cheeky favour to ask....
As a part of a counselling course that I (Andrew) am doing I'm taking part in a group research project on people's preferences for remote vs in person counselling services. We are doing a brief survey which takes about 5 minutes to fill in, and it'd be a massive help if any of you were up for doing it. Even if you have never had counselling and have no intention to do so in future, your responses would still be useful. Click here and assume my heartfelt thanks!
And with that, back to the comics!
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- FISHFLIES #1 - Previewed on Free Comic Book Day, the latest series written and drawn by Jeff Lemire is here at last. Apparently extensively revised since its Substack days, the story of a young girl and the transformed fugitive she shelters plays into all of Lemire's small-town horror strengths. Lemire is on top art form on this book, particularly in his subtle use of colour. I know his style isn't always to everyone's taste, but do check this out.
- KNIGHT TERRORS #1 - Week two of the journey through DC's nightmares, including the first issue proper of the event mini-series. It's up to Batman and Deadman to get to the bottom of who Insomnia is. And meanwhile the rest of the DCU are trapped in their worst dreams, the covers of which you can bathe in the glory of below...
- KNIGHT TERRORS GREEN LANTERN #1
- KNIGHT TERRORS ROBIN #1
- KNIGHT TERRORS SHAZAM #1
- KNIGHT TERRORS THE FLASH #1
- KNIGHT TERRORS ZATANNA #1
- WORLDS FINEST TEEN TITANS #1 - We seem to be hitting a wave of Teen Titans nostalgia, with Tom Taylor's new Titans series doing gangbusters. Now Mark Waid and Emanuela Lupacchino go back to the early days in a series that reimagines their earliest adventures. Waid is really running on all cylinders at DC right now, so we're up for this.
- HUNGER AND THE DUSK #1 - A new high fantasy series from Gosh faves G. Willow Wilson and Chris Wildgoose! In a land on its last legs, wracked by war between humans and orcs, a new threat emerges which means the two mortal enemies must make common purpose if either are to survive.
- X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST DOOMSDAY #1 - Speaking of going back to the past, this mini by Marc Guggenheim and Manuel Garcia takes us back....to the future! Heh. Anyway, at last the story behind one of the great mutant sagas, Days of Future Past, is going to be told, as in the near future the assassination of Senator Kelly brings about a dark new status quo for mutantkind.
- FALLEN FRIEND THE DEATH OF MS MARVEL #1 - Following the events of Amazing Spider-Man #26, the heroes of the Marvel Universe remember Kamala Khan in a clutch of stories by Mark Waid, G. Willow Wilson, Saladin Ahmed, Humberto Ramos,Takeshi Miyazawa & Andrea Di Vito.
- WHAT IF…? DARK LOKI #1 - A What If set during Walt Simonson's run, written by Simonson (with art by Scott Eaton)? I'm paying attention. Looks like everything's coming up Ragnarok!
- CON & ON #1 - Paul Cornell and Marika Cresta follow a cast of characters through the history of America's biggest con. Part satire, part love letter, and just in time for San Diego Comicon!
- ROCKETEER IN THE DEN OF THIEVES #1 - Stephen Mooney and David Messina follow on from the events of the Great Race, as Cliff and Betty return home only to find those damn Nazis up to their usual tricks. This time they've kidnapped Peevy!
- PANYA THE MUMMY’S CURSE #1 - The untold story of resident BPRD mummy, Panya! Mike Mignola teams with Chris Roberson and Christopher Mitten for this flashback to ancient Mignolaverse Egypt.
- SIRENS OF THE CITY #1 - A new urban fantasy by Joanne Starer and Khary Randolph, following a runaway teen on the streets of 80s NYC. As though an unwanted pregnancy weren't enough, she now also has to deal with a ravenous pack of monsters that want her dead.
- ANTARCTICA #1 - Simon Birks & Wili Roberts spin a yarn about a young woman who trains as an engineer so she can follow in her father's footsteps. In this case her father's footsteps were "went missing under mysterious circumstances during a research mission to the Antarctic." She wants to find out why, and other forces most definitely do not want her to.
And that's it! Bumper week, so get stuck in!
Andrew.
