The Gosh! Authority 16.02.22
Hello!
Not much to report, other than it's half-term this week, and things are likely to be C.R.A.Z.Y. in the store, especially in the vicinity of the manga and kids books. Steel yourselves! We certainly are.
Also, just a reminder that the Recycled Books section on our webstore is being updated constantly with new (old) material, including many out of print and hard to find tomes. Do be sure to keep an eye on it!
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- METAX HC - Antoine Cossé, creator of such Gosh faves as Showtime and Mutiny Bay, returns with a fantastic new work, set in a dystopian future that feels both prescient of a world filled with inequality and greed, and depressingly evocative of the past. Cossé never fails to create interesting, compelling narratives, all told in his signature style of dreamy lines and ink washes. This tale of an essential resource, a kindgom filled with conspiracies and power plays, and a resistance movement driven by the youth is no exception.
- THE LION AND THE EAGLE #1 - Garth Ennis and PJ Holden are back together for an all-new World War II tale set in the jungles of Burma. A British Special Forces unit head deep behind Japanese lines with one mission: destroy any enemy positions they find. But what they find are evidence of the horrors that were perpetrated across South East Asia, and the gruelling, nightmarish nature of jungle warfare.
- IRON FIST #1 - Alyssa Wong and Michael Yg introduce a brand new Iron Fist! Danny Rand has given up the power of the Iron Fist, so who's the new hero with the glowing hands that claims to hail from K'un-Lun? Sounds like there's a DARK SECRET <tm> at the heart of it all! Quick note about this one: there's been heavy demand on it, so if you're down for Iron Fist already, you'll be covered, but I've only got a couple spare for requests. Let me know ASAP if you're interested, but I can't guarantee it!
- MARVELS VOICES LEGACY 2022 #1 - Just in time for Black History Month, Marvel present this year's collection of stories featuring black heroes in stories by black creators, including prose and screen writers who are making the jump to comics. Natacha Bustos, Victor LaValle, J. Holtham & Cody Ziglar are among the line-up.
- HALCYON HC - The return of Ron Regé, Jr., arguably one of the most influential indie cartoonists of the past 20 years. Halcyon is a typically idiosyncratic SF moral tale of two non-binary protagonists who undergo a spiritual journey, drawn in Regé's unique style, which is at once dense and experimental while also bright, loose and accessible. Always nice to see a new work from such a singular talent.
- FOREST HC - Swiss artist Thomas Ott, the modern master of wordless narrative, returns with The Forest, a graphic novella about a young boy sneaking away into a dark wood, told in 25 stunning illustrations. As much an art book as it is a comic, Ott's lush scratchboard illustrations are presented on a heavy art paper stock with pantone black ink and bound as a beautiful hardcover.
- LET’S MAKE DUMPLINGS SC - From the same line as the ever-popular Let's Make Ramen and Cook Korean, Hugh Amano and Sarah Becan are here to give you a pan-Asian guide to dumplings, as well as some interesting fusion ideas. Comics are an ideal medium for recipe books, and it's a wonder this kind of thing hasn't been adopted en masse for that particular genre. So dumpling-lovers should grab a copy, and it's a solid gift idea for the chefs in your life. Also, it's 9am on a Sunday as I write this, and I am now totally craving some dumplings.
