And can you believe we're only a few short weeks away from Free Comic Book Day? We announced our plans this past weekend, with the usual mix of kids drawing table sessions, signings and window paintings. You can find a summary post about all of that here!

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • SUMMER OF SUPERMAN #1 - Mark Waid and Joshua Williamson invite Dan Slott and Jorge Jiminez to their Superman party as they kick off DCs big seasonal Supes push, what with the movie on the horizon and all. This one-shot features two stories (one by Waid, the other by Williamson and Slott, both drawn by Jiminez) which lay the groundwork for some big events about to hit the Super-family. A great jumping-on point for those who fancy dipping their toes in (especially with that slick Jiminez art!)

  • ACTION COMICS #1 FACSIMILE EDITION - Speaking of a seasonal Supes push, this Saturday has been dubbed "Superman Day" by DC, and as a part of those celebrations they're releasing this special reproduction of Superman's first appearance in all its golden age-sized glory, similar to the last Batman Day reproduction of Detective Comics #27. Probably the closest you'll ever get to getting your hands on the real deal!

  • GOLDEN RAGE MOTHER KNOWS BEST #1 - Chrissie Williams, Lauren Knight and Sophie Dodgson are taking us back to their dystopian future, where post-menopausal women, deemed no longer useful to society, are exiled to a retirement island where "Fight to the Death" is top of the activities list. We pick up where we left off the original mini, with the mainland about invade, so do yourself a favour and jump in to a series best described as "cosy battle royale".

  • SUPERIOR AVENGERS #1 - Obviously when dominating the world, the discerning dictator needs to co-opt icons for his or her own purposes. And what more discerning dictator than DOOM? Yes, the good Doctor is putting together his own team of Avengers under the guidance of his lad Kristoff, and Steve Foxe, Kyle Hotz and Luca Maresca are on hand to document it.

  • GODZILLA VS HULK #1 - Big G is back for another Marvel tussle, and this time it's with Marvel's own Jolly Green Giant. Still, not as giant as Godzilla, so the Hulk has his work cut out for him as Thunderbolt Ross continues his crusade against the terrible lizard. This chapter is brought to you by Gerry Duggan and Giuseppe Camuncoli!

  • BURIED LONG LONG AGO #1 - A tale of supernatural horror by Anthony Cleveland and Alex Cormack based on real events - the murderous exploits of early 20th Century serial killer Belle Gunness. Told through the eyes of her three children, we see Gunness entice her victims to her Indiana farm with promises of marriage only to murder them. But it seems there is something else behind the killings, something old and evil that is buried beneath the farm.

  • SPAWN VIOLATOR TP - A blast from the past! This hasn't been reprinted in a long, long time, so I thought it was worth a highlight as one of Alan Moore's most enjoyable forays into the world of OTT 90s superhero comics, working with Bart Sears and Greg Capullo. It was a bit of an experiment for Moore, eschewing his normal full script style for loose layouts that he felt were better suited to the dynamism of comics at the time. The result is a hyped-up, wise cracking gore-fest that is very, very silly, but also heaps of fun.

And that's it for this week! Not a biggie!

Andrew.
