HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • NEW GODS #1 - The Dawnrunner team of Ram V and Evan Cagle launch their very impressive-looking take on Kirby's iconic cosmic cast. Big Barda and Mr Miracle are on Earth dealing with the challenges of a new baby, while out at the edges of the cosmos an Old God dies and a new one is born. And according to Metron, this all adds up to a heapin' helpin' of cosmic level chaos. This is one of my most anticipated books of the year, and the previews of it are stunning. Be sure to check it out!

  • CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN #1 - A decidedly JLA twist on the Challengers as Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis now work as the caretakers of the Watchtower, keeping an eye on the interdimensional rifts opened in the wake of DC All In. But they're not doing it alone, as they're joined by the DC Trinity to help out when the going gets tough. Rising star Christopher Cantwell is joined by artist Sean Izaakse for this one.

  • DAMNED #1 - Welcome back to the dark, absurdist world of Eric Haven! It's a new one-shot of weirdness that recalls the joys of early 90's independent comics where genres mash, twist and procreate. Dreams? Nightmares? Assassins? Romance? Conspiracies? Sandwiches? They're all here!

  • FREDDIE THE FIX #1 - Garth Ennis teams up with Mike Perkins for a horror (and presumably comedy) one-shot introducing us to Freddie, a man you want to call when things go to hell in a handbasket. Maybe literally, as Freddie's clientele are the inhabitants of Hollywood after dark: werewolves, vampires, and other things that go bump in the night, and then maybe go get hammered and accidentally kill a doorman. Anyone wishing Ennis would write John Constantine again: this is probably as close as you're going to get. And if you all buy it, we might see more!

  • GREEN LANTERN GREEN ARROW WORLDS FINEST SPECIAL #1 - Poor old Flash. He doesn't even get a look in on the cover here, even though he's got his own story inside this oversized one shot. Instead we get those showboaters Millionaire Arrow Man and Party Ring Dudebro on the cover. Bah! I'm not even going to read their lead story by Jeremy Adams and Lucas Meyer, set in the past where they discover the existence of the shadowy assassin Deathstroke. No sir, I'm flicking straight to the backup by Adams and Travis Mercer, where Barry Allen is about to get involved in the Crisis. I'm sure that'll go well!

  • TVA #1 - The Time Variance Authority gets its own series at last, bringing together heroes from destroyed timelines to take on new time-menacing threats. I'm surprised it's taken this long, to be honest. Given the fuss around the Loki tv series, and even the Miss Minutes variant covers that came out around the time, it would have seemed like something they;d have tried a while ago. Maybe it's down to creator avialability, as they've managed to net Katharyn Blair - one of the writers on Loki season two - to write it, with Pere Pérez on art. Well, it's that or the power of Deadpool Wolverine strikes again.

  • PARLIAMENT OF ROOKS #1 - Already a sensation online, Abigail Harding's beautiful gothic fantasy makes it to print! Architect Darius Ravenscar has been comissioned for a job by the princess, and he sets out for the capital to present her with his proposal. But his dreams are troubled and some kind of transformation is beginning to take place...

  • NEXUS SCOURGE #1 - Mike Baron and Steve Rude, two legends of the 80s, had an interesting solution to the creative differences they had over their co-creation, Nexus. They decided to amicably part ways and each do their own take on their sci-fi hero, each being as valid as the other. This is Baron's, teaming up with artist Kelsey Shannon for a two-issue mini-series that sees Nexus taking on a planet-destroying menace.

  • HORIZON EXPERIMENT MOTHERF***IN MONSTERS #1 - The latest Horizon Experiment sees Jason Holtham (screenwriter on series such as A Handmaids Tale and Jessica Jones) & Michael Lee Harris unleash "Evil Dead for Black nerds". From the look of it we're talking more of an Evil Dead 2 / Army of the Dead vibe, which is to say: a healthy dash of horror with a slathering of comedy. I've been enjoying these HE titles so far, a much better standard than you traditionally see on these kind of "pilot" series. Check them out if you get the chance!

  • HELLVERINE #1 - Benjamin Percy and Raffaele Ienco bring us another series starring the demon-possessed Wolverine, only this time Bagra-ghul has slipped into the skin of the resurrected Akihiro, aka Daken! That's right, Daken's back! Merry Christmas!

  • ALLIGATOR LOKI HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1 - Alligator Loki is back for a Christmas horror antholo---wait! It's a Christmas comedy special! I love a horror anthology as much as the next horror maniac, but I for one am happy for Alyssa Wong and Bob Quinn to give me some festive silliness.

And that's it! Have a wonderful week however you choose to, and we'll see you at the end of the year!

Andrew & Greg.
