The Gosh! Authority 26.05.21

Hello!

Ahh, May!

Not much to report this week. I'm once again having to use a preliminary shipping list this week, but hopefully we should also be seeing the AWOL DC titles from last week as well (Justice League, Flash, Legends of the Dark Knight & Nightwing). Let's get on with chatting comics, shall we?

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • MILESTONE RETURNS INFINITE EDITION #0 - The return of the Milestone line! Teased in the DC Fandome online event (whose 17 pages of content are reproduced here plus a further 24 pages of all-new material), the legendary comics line created by the late Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle feels more timely than ever. Created to help correct the lack of representation of black superheroes in American comics, the relaunch gives a reimagined version of the Big Bang event that acts as an origin for all the favourites: Icon, Rocket, Static, Hardware and more (apparently Xombi is returning in some fashion a little down the line, which makes me very happy). Original creator Denys Cowan is back along with the likes of Reginald Hudlin, Chriscross, Bill Sienciewicz (Cowan's inking buddy) and more.

  • MISTER MIRACLE SOURCE OF FREEDOM #1 - Springing from the back-up stories in Future State, this new 6-issue mini retells the early years of Shilo Norman, the OTHER Mister Miracle, for the modern DC era. Norman is a preeminent escapologist known as Mister Miracle, moonlighting as a celebrity superhero taking on Metropolis thugs. But the road to Future State is laid down when another performer aims to supplant him both as an act and as the man known as Mister Miracle. But who is he, and what is his real agenda? Mysterious! Brandon Easton and Fico Ossio will tell you all about it.

  • MADE IN KOREA #1 (OF 6) - A gentle sci-fi fable about identity and belonging set in a future where being a biological parent is no longer an option, and the world's first true artificial intelligence unexpectedly resides within a young android girl who has been adopted by an American family. It's a particularly personal story for writer Jeremy Holt, who as an identical triplet who was adopted from Korea into a US family knows all too well the thematic subject matter. George Schall provides the art for what looks like a fascinating read.

  • HEROES REBORN MAGNETO AND MUTANT FORCE #1 - Three Heroes Reborn spin-off one-shots this week! These have been good fun so far, so if you're on board for HR, then worth considering. After a Mutant Massacre at the hands of the Squadron Supreme, Magneto leads the remnants of the world's mutants (Mutanity? Just trying it out.) After he discovers evidence of Professor Xavier (thought to have been killed) on the astral plane, he forms the Mutant Force to rescue him. But the Squadron have other ideas thanks to Steve Orlando & Bernard Chang.

  • HEROES REBORN SIEGE SOCIETY #1 - The faction of the Squadron Supreme led by Nighthawk now resides in Europe, but Baron Zemo has something to say about that, and has some company to help him. Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton, Scott Lang and Victor Creed take on the Squadron Supreme courtesy of Cody Ziglar and Paco Medina.

  • HEROES REBORN YOUNG SQUADRON #1 - Kid Spectrum (Sam Alexander), Girl Power (Kamala Khan) and the all-new Falcon (Miles Morales) fight for the ideals of the Squadron Supreme as the Young Squadron, holding up the values of truth, justice and the American way. Or do they? Deadpool smells a rat, and he's determined to get to the bottom of it in this one-shot by Jim Zub and Steve Cummings.

  • STONE FRUIT HC - The debut graphic novel by Australian (currently residing in Canada) writer and artist Lee Lai, who is being touted as one of the most exciting new talents on the rise. The story contrasts the disintegrating relationship between two women, Ray and Bron, with the re-connection they begin to make with their respective sisters as they grow apart from one another. There's a lot to be said about how difficult it can become to be emotionally vulnerable with our siblings as we grow older, and how powerful that connection can be when we do make it.

  • REPTIL #1 (OF 4) - And for something completely different...Humberto Lopez, the teen hero known as Reptil, has stepped back from superhero life due to Kamala's Law and an ailing grandfather. But just as he's about to pack it all in, a mysterious figure seems to point towards unknown secrets of his past that might answer the question of where he really came from. Terry Blas and Enid Balám will pull back the curtain.

  • METABARONS SC - Woof! A honking big softcover collection of the first cycle of Alejandro Jodorwosky and the late, great Juan Gimenez's space opera. Just thought I should point this out in case you have any interest whatsoever in incredible science fiction epics. If you love the likes of Dune, or read the Incal but never explored further, this is a must-buy.

And that's me done for the week! See you next time for more comics fun.

Andrew.
