HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • METAMORPHO THE ELEMENT MAN #1 - Two things we love in comics: Al Ewing and Metamorpho. And we're also rather fond of Steve Lieber, who once sent us a lovely sketched postcard for saying nice things about his old series The Fix. And award-winning colourist Lee Loughridge is no slouch either, btw. Anyway, I digress: all four of those things can be found beneath the covers of this shiny new first issue! It looks like Ewing is going for some crazy, pop comics kind of stuff as the Element Man takes on a veritable Morrison's worth of oddballs and ginchy kooks. Honestly, I think Lieber is great, but how is this not drawn by Michael Allred?

  • DUST TO DUST #1 - JG Jones, drawing and co-writing with Phil Bram, knocks it out of the park with this new mini set in Depression-era America. In a failing farm town in Oklahoma, a washed up sherrif and a photojournalist work together to track down a serial killer who is terrorising the area. This is the time of the Dust Bowl, where the plains are ravaged by dust storms due to a combination of drought and mismanagement. And as huge storms bear down on New Hope, the killer works in their shadow.

  • TIMESLIDE #1 - Remember the Timeless annual one-shots that gave us a look at what was coming up in the next year for the Marvel Universe? Well Kang is out (can't think why) and the X-Men are in! Cable and Bishop are on the trail of a time-jumping menace who intends to nip the X-Gene in the bud. As they bounce around we're givien visions of the past, present and future, as only Steve Foxe and Ivan Fiorelli can show it!

  • SABRETOOTH THE DEAD DON’T TALK #1 - Remember that whole thing about Sabretooth being a gangster in the New York City of the early 20th Century? No? Well you will now! Meet Mad Dog Murphy, the strangely hairy, claw-y, fang-y terror of the underworld. Hopefully he's got a silly top hat like Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. Please make it happen Frank Tieri & Michael Sta. Maria!

  • KID MAROON #1 - Christopher Cantwell seems to be everywhere these days! Here he's paired up with Polar creator Victor Santos for an homage to the detective comics of old. Child sleuth Waldon Maroon was sick of the humdrum mysteries of his small hometown, and so he moved to Crimeville to up the stakes, armed with only his brains and his slingshot. But now he's getting tired of the hard boiled life just as a string of grisly murders needs solving. Who's doing the killings? And is it too late for him to just be a kid?

  • KIDPOOL AND SPIDER-BOY #1 - Christopher Yost and Jed Dougherty turn out the toy box and starting banging a couple of them together as Kid meets Boy. Beyond that I can't tell you much, because there's not much information to be found, but dollars to doughnuts it's going to be a bit of silly fun, and lord knows we could all use a bit of that!

  • HELLHUNTERS #1 - Speaking of toys coming out of the toybox, Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Adam Gorham are having some fun here, heading back to WWII with a cast including Ghost Rider (1944 edition), Wolverine (sorry...James Howlett), Sgt Fury, Bucky Barnes and of course the one we've all been waiting for...Sebastian Szardos, the Soldier Supreme!

And that's a wrap for 2024! See you on the other side, friends!
