Hello!

dnd25-july-600.jpg

We've got a couple of events for you this week: first up we're welcoming CROM, Clio Isadora and our D'n'D resident cartoonist Mark Stafford for the latest installment of Drink & Draw! Meet at the shop around 6.30pm this Friday before heading along to the pub to draw, draw, draw! And drink. Details here! And please remember that capacity is limited, so the early bird gets the pub!

And then on Saturday we have the legendary Dougal Dixon here from 1-2pm to sign copies of the shiny new reprint of his classic follow-up to After Man, The New Dinosaurs! Get the details here.

Just a reminder, we are hiring! Applications close this Friday the 1st August, so if you're thinking about putting your hat in the ring, better be quick! Details here.

AUGUST CATALOGUES

Catalogues for DC, Image, Titan and a number of others (in the "Next Phase" catalogue) can be found here each month

Catalogues for Marvel, Dark Horse, Boom, IDW and others (in the "PRH Panels" catalogue) can be found here each month.

No sign yet of the Previews or Previews UK catalogues for August.

After the chaos of last week's deliveries, we're hoping for something a little more settled and normal this week. We can but hope, but signs are good!

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • THE WAR #1 - Originally serialised in the Hello Darkness anthology, Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan's dark psychological thriller is being compiled into a mini-series for those who missed it. This is not your breezy, black comedy Ennis: the War really showcases his understanding of human horror, and Cloonan is the perfect artist to accompany him. Highly recommended. I should also say, I won't be automatically copying this over to our usual Ennis list, as many of you already picked up Hello Darkness, so if you fancy it, do let me know.

  • HERO TRADE HERO FOR SALE TP - I remember back in the day when Bad Idea were the crazy new publisher on the block who didn't play by the rules, and did mad direct distribution antics that meant we couldn't get their comics, and so I couldn't read new works by creators I liked, including David Lapham. I was surly about it. But now my surliness has passed like clouds before the sun as Bad Idea embrace normal publishing ideas, and this story by Matt Kindt and Lapham makes its way to my sweaty paws at last! A man tours across town selling body parts from a dead superhero he has in his car boot. If you need more hook than that, then this isn't the book for you.

  • SAVAGE WOLVERINE #1 - A one-shot reprint of a formerly digital exclusive that is well worth picking up, mainly for the fact that it's written by Tom Parkinson-Morgan, author of the criminally underrated Kill Six Billion Demons. Shame he didn't draw it as well, but he's ably supported by Guillermo Sanna on art for this great slice of superhero horror.

  • JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK TOMORROW #1 - Time stuff! Yep, in the wake of the We Are Yesterday crossover, the new Quantum Quorum are being hunted by a mysterious time-killer. Time for Batman Beyond, Gold Beetle, the Helena Wayne Huntress and more to saddle up and save the day! A one-shot set-up for the next big DC event. Mark Waid & Marc Guggenheim & Cian Tormey.

  • G.O.D.S. ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #1 - Ryan North and Francesco Mortarino revisit the servants of the Powers-That-Be in this one-shot tie-in. Wyn and his assistant Mia showdown with a world-conquering Sorcerer Supreme, but maybe what he's got to offer is better than the deal Mia currently gets with Wyn.

  • SPEED RACER #1 - David Pepose & Davide Tinto bring the manga and cartoon classic back to comics! But the danger isn't just in the underground races that Speed Racer is competing in for thrills and presitige: this time the threat also extends to his family, as mysterious enemies close in.

  • DC’S KAL-EL-FORNIA LOVE #1 - Again, whoever's naming these things deserves some kind of prize. You know the score: DC celebrates the season, with an anthology summer special focusing on the Super-family (it is the Summer of Superman, after all). And John Constantine on the beach!

  • I TYRANT #1 - An author is hounded by his tyrannical creation to change the ending of his story. I think. I'll be honest, all the blurb info on this new title by ee zann and Godfarr is pretty vague, but it has some early Grant Morrison post modernism vibes, so is probably worth a check? Hardly a resounding endorsement, true, but it has me intrigued.

  • WEREWOLF BY NIGHT BLOOD MOON RISE #1 - But I know where I stand with this! A bloody werewolf one-shot written by Michael Giacchino, director of the Werewolf by Night Disney+ special, with art by David Messina.

  • SPIDER-MAN VS SINISTER SIXTEEN #1 - JMS returns for the final of his Marvel team-up one-shots, finishing with some Spidey and artist Phil Noto. Team up might be the wrong phrase though, because this is wall-to-wall Spidey villains, just out to ruin his evening.

  • GODZILLA VS AMERICA BOSTON #1 - The Big G tramples through the cartoonists of Boston, with stories from Hanna Cha, Hayden Sherman, Jesse Lonergan, Steve Orlando & Matt Emmons.

  • WHAT IF GOOFY BECAME SPIDER-MAN #1 - Now here's a What If I can get behind! While he'll never have the grumpy appeal of Donald Duck, Goofy will always be a firm 2nd in my Disney pantheon. Brought to you by Steve Behling, Riccardo Secchi and Francesco D'Ippolito.

And that's me done once more!
