The Gosh! Authority 31.08.22

Hello!

Paul here for one last time as Andrew wrestles control of the blog back next week. All I can tell you is I fought bravely. Dry your eyes, though, because we have a great week of events and comics coming up at Gosh!

First up is our launch party for the delightful – and thrilling – Revenge of the Librarians by Tom Gauld. Tom’s books have been a fixture here at Gosh for a while now, proving immensely popular with pretty much everyone that comes in, not to mention his lovely work on our shop window for The Little Wooden Robot & The Log Princess. We’re immensely happy to have an exclusive bookplate for Revenge of the Librarians, limited to the first 300 copies of the book. You can pre-order it here and join us in welcoming Tom back for the launch on Wednesday 31st August from 7-9pm. More details here.

Although we’ve talked about this before over the last couple of blogs, we’d like to remind you that applications are still open for an assistant to the book buyer here at the shop. You can get more details right here.

Finally, a polite reminder that the new comics are delayed this week due to the bank holiday. They're arriving to go out at some point on Wednesday. We're not sure when, but based on previous bank holidays, we'll aim to have stuff on the shelves around 3-4pm. Give us a call before coming in just to be sure.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • AMAZING FANTASY #1000 – No, we’re not sure how the math works on this one either, but hey, what a milestone! The names contributing to this book read like a who’s who of top comics creative talent, including Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Hickman, Ho Che Anderson, Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman, Marco Checchetto, Terry Dodson and… Armando Ianucci?! We’ll put money on the fact Armando is not doing the art…

  • SUPERMAN: WARWORLD APOCALYPSE #1 – Philip Kennedy-Johnson is joined by artists Miguel Mendoca, Will Conrad, Brandon Peterson and Max Raynor for this super-sized closer to the Warworld saga, which has taken Action Comics to new places. This sets the scene for The Man of Steel to return to Earth and from there the next phase of the Superman titles so if you’ve been following this for a while, this won’t be one to miss!

  • THUNDERBOLTS #1 (of 5) & THUNDERBOLTS: MARVEL TALES #1 – With the Thunderbolts soon to make their movie debut, Marvel gets you primed with TWO Thunderbolts books! In the Thunderbolts #1, by Jim Zub and Sean Izaakse, a brand new team takes the mantle. In Thunderbolts: Marvel Tales, you get reprints of the first couple of issues of the original series by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, plus the ‘Bolts appearances in The Incredible Hulk and Tales of The Marvel Universe. The identity of the original Thunderbolts was one of the biggest rug pulls in comics. How will Marvel match it this time ‘round?

  • DC: SAVED BY THE BELLE REVE – Another anthology, another huge roster of comic book talent! It’s back to school with the bad guys at Belle Reve in eight tales that could only be told in detention. Prepare to be schooled by Becky Cloonan, Brendan Fletcher, Brandon Thomas, Art Baltazar, Scot Kolins and Karl Kerschl among others. This is the book we used up all our school puns on! It’s definitely one for the younger comics readers in your household!

  • HARLEY QUINN: THE ANIMATED SERIES – THE REAL SIDEKICKS OF NEW GOTHAM SPECIAL – I’ll be honest, the title of this book is so long, I almost forgot what I was writing about! This one isn’t for the kids, as the bawdier, naughtier version of Harley leads the way in a collection featuring Tee Franklin, P.J. Holden, Conner Shin and Erica Henderson. The animated Harley feels like the mistress of mirth in her true form so this is going to be good!

See you next week for Andrew's triumphant return!
