Robert W. Chambers (1965-1933) was an American artist and author who is best known today for a collection of short stories published in 1895 entitled "The King in Yellow". The Yellow Sign is a story that was included in this same collection.
Many of the tales from "The King in Yellow" deal with the themes of decadence, madness and death. In these stories, Chambers introduced a fictional play entitled "The King in Yellow". The content of this play was supposedly so disturbing that anyone reading it would be driven insane, often comitting suicide or succumbing to an undefined malady that would result in their death.
Chambers' "The King in Yellow" was much admired by the horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. Many of Chambers' themes were subsequently incorporated into the "Cthulhu Mythos".
