A beautifully raw depiction of “Otherness”, In Limbo is a coming-of-age graphic memoir following Deb JJ Lee as a Korean-American living in the United States. It portrays the universal experience of struggling to make friends in high school and having fights with your mother, but also depicts the Korean standards of body image and mental health, and the blunt racism experienced by many Asian-Americans in the US. Deb JJ Lee’s detailed illustrations are able to show the intricacies of modern-day life while also handling sensitive subject matters such as suicide. It’s a modern-day masterpiece.
