In December 1915, Georgia O’Keeffe was 28 years old. She taught art at Columbia College in South Carolina. Art was something she made for herself, in her free time.

O’Keeffe was at a crossroads. All of her art had been made for her professors at School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Students League of New York. All derivative. But no more!

O’Keeffe began drawing in charcoal on laid Fabiano paper. She wet the charcoal. She used the surface of the floor as her desk and the closet door as her easel. In these charcoal Specials she created her own style to express her feelings.
