The Gosh! Authority 06.03.24

Hello!

No events this week! In the meantime I've brought you the beginning of Spring. Enjoy!

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • BAT-MAN FIRST KNIGHT #1 - A gorgeous Black Label Batman (or should I say The Bat-Man) mini by Dan Jurgens and Mike Perkins (doing some career-best work). It's a retelling of a Golden Age Batman story, set in the Gotham of 1939, with facism on the rise politically and violence on the rise on the streets. The Bat-Man investigates a series of murders with a gruesome twist: the suspected killers are already dead, executed in the electric chair. Noir-tastic!

  • TORPEDO 1972 #1 - Torpedo co-creator Enrique Sanchez Abuli teams with the ever-amazing Eduardo Risso for a return of the classic character into a new age. New York City in 1972 is a different world to the 1930's Big Apple that the now elderly Lucas "Torpedo" Torelli operated in. He should be retired from his violent ways, but when a journalist starts digging into his past, he quickly discovers Torpedo isn't just a gentle old retiree after all.

  • ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 - The new Ultimate Universe continues, with perhaps the boldest reimagning yet. Peach Momoko brings her unique vision to a whole new squad of mutant heroes. Our in is Hisako Ichiki, a Japanese teenager whose mutant powers bring her into the orbit of a new team of heroes, whteher she wants it or not. Momoko can be a bit marmite, but her work is always interesting and she's had some fascinating takes on old Marvel standards before.

  • SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MEN #1 - Greg Weisman and Humberto Ramos launch a new ongoing team-up title as Peter Parker and Miles Morales hit the streets together. Makes sense, I guess!

  • WEAPON X-MEN #1 - Following on from the events of the Original X-Men one-shot, Phoenix pulls Logan into the conflict with Onslaught. And what's better than one Wolverine? Like, a whole multiverse of the little rascals. Christos Gage and Yildiray Çinar no doubt give us a few fun variants on everyone's favourite hairy Canadian.

  • ALIENS WHAT IF #1 - We've seen the alternate realities of the Marvel Universe, but what if ALIENS something something something question mark? I'm always up for a What If, so let's see what Hans Rodionoff, Adam F. Goldberg, Leon Reiser, Brian Volk-Weiss, Guiu Vilanova and Burke himself, Paul Reiser do with the question, What If Burke Had Lived? WHAT IF??

  • NIGHT PEOPLE #1 - Chris Condon and a rotating group of artists beginning with Brian Level adapt the classic Barry Gifford novel (he of Wild at Heart and Lost Highway writing fame). Through four interlocking stories we follow a motley crew of characters across the American South. Expect sweat and mosquitoes.

  • FOG #1 - Yes, THAT Fog. John Carpenter's Fog! Set 40 years after the events of the film, this sequel series takes us back to Antonio Bay, now a hot-spot for ghost hunting tourism. But evil awaits! Eviiiiiil! Anyway, Steve Ekstrom and Marco Foderà have certainly got guts to take on one of Carpenter's most beloved films. "Eleven-fifty-five. Almost midnight. Enough time for one more story. One more story before twelve ..."

  • TMNT THE LAST RONIN II #1 - A follow-up to the smash hit Last Ronin (aka "The Dark Turtle Returns") series which chronicled the last adventure of Michelangelo. Now, 10 years later, it's time for a new generation of Turtles, raised by Casey Marie, to take on the evils of a new era. Kevin Eastman teams with Tom Waltz, Ben Bishop, Esau Escorza & Isaac Escorza for the new chapter.

  • GIANT-SIZED SPIDER-GWEN #1 - A new Spider-Gwen tale featuring a little bit of Carnage, a little bit of Doc Ock, and a little bit of reprint (Spider-Gwen #13) to make up a bumper sized one-shot special.

  • MS MARVEL MUTANT MENACE #1 - Sabir Pirzada and Iman Vellani (Ms Marvel herself) return for a new mini-series with artist Scott Godlewski, following on from the events of Ms Marvel The New Mutant. Turns out being a mutant isn't all sunshine and roses! If only she'd realised when they had, like, an island and fancy balls and resurrection and stuff.

  • GOLGOTHA MOTOR MOUNTAIN #1 - A gonzo new series by Lonnie Nadler, Matthew Erman & Robbi Rodriguez. Two meth-cooking brothers in Golgotha Knob, Kentucky face some disruption to their business after a falling chunk of space rock turns the local populace into crazed mutant freaks. Still, customers are customers, and the meth must go through if the brothers are to fulfill their dream of a new life in Cincinnati.

Solid week! See you next time!
