Then from 7-9pm it's time for Reads, the graphic novel reading group! This month the group is discussing Tom Humberstone's Suzanne Lenglen biography Suzanne. All are welcome, so come on down! Details here.
And finally, Saturday from 1-2pm sees the return to our signing table of kids comics superstar John Patrick Green to celebrate the release of Investigators Class Action. Details here.
Big week on the comics front, including the long-awaited return of Twomorrows magazines! Alter Ego, Back Issue, Comic Book Creator, Cryptology, Jack Kirby Collector and Retrofan are all here this week to soak up your spare funds.
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- UMBRELLA ACADEMY PLAN B #1 - The OG UA team return, as Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá unfold volume four of their superhero saga. It's all a bit "Move Aside, Umbrella Academy", as their hitherto unknown brothers and sisters - The Sparrows - take control in the wake of Hotel Oblivion. Existential angst (and probably fighting) ensues!
- ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN INCURSION #1 - Meanwhile, over in the Ultimate Universe, they've got a visitor in the form of Miles Morales, who's on the trail of his little sister, who has used the key to the new Ultimate Universe which the Maker gave to Miles. Not his first Ultimate rodeo, as Deniz Camp and Jonas Scharf will no doubt tell you.
- TRINITY DAUGHTER OF WONDER WOMAN #1 - Following on from the back-up stories in Wonder Woman, Tom King and Belén Ortega graduate Trinity into her own mini-series. Lizzie is keen to know her father, so she plunges feet-first into the time stream to find him. Absolutely no problem in that course of action, I'm sure.
- ROBIN & BATMAN JASON TODD #1 - A sequel to the Robin & Batman mini by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, only this time we're dealing with a different Robin who's a bit, shall we say, crabbier than the previous one. Journey back to where it started for Jason Todd, and his wonderful journey into the world of superheroes, which worked out really well for him.
- GIANT SIZE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 - A pretty impressive one-shot of Spidey stories featuring the likes of Al Ewing, Chip Zdarsky, Kevin Smith (!), Mitsuyasu Sakai, CAFU, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Gerardo Sandoval and Mark Buckingham!
- NEW AVENGERS #1 - Psych! Turns out that New Thunderbolts series that was coming up was actually a New Avengers series all along! I wonder where they got that idea. Anyway, Sam Humphries and Ton Lima have Bucky and the Black Widow assembling a team that looks more like a Defenders roster than an Avengers one, but should get some fun sparks flying.
- DEATH OF SILVER SURFER #1 - It's the beginning of the end for Norrin Radd as he rides the cosmic waves back to Earth, and becomes entangled in a conflict that might just spell the end of everything when old powers are awoken. Grek Pak and Sumit Kumar start the tale under a lovely cover by Dike Ruan.
- BLOOD TYPE #1 - Spinning out of Epitaphs From the Abyss, Oni's flagship EC anthology, comes the continuing adventures of Ada the vampire, now plying her thirsty trade in the Caribbean. As she preys on the inhabitants of a holiday resort, she quickly discovers that something else is out there in the dark, and its intended prey is her. Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino keep the EC train rolling.
- BLUE PALO VERDE #1 - Fan fave Ray Fawkes teams with artist Rimanti for a slice of American Southwest folk horror. A woman just out of prison heads into the desert in search of her missing father. What she finds is a small, isolated town and a less than warm welcome.
- RUNAWAYS #1 - Rainbow Rowell returns to the Runaways, along with artist Elena Casagrande. Things are looking a bit shaky for the team, with lost powers and broken hearts, not to mention Doctor Doom settings his sights on them. Time to shake off those doldrums!
- SPIDER-GIRL #1 - Straight out of the pages of Spider-Boy comes the new Spider-Girl! Torunn Grønbekk and Andre Risso give Maka Akana a proper shot as a hero after things didn't work out as Bullseye's sidekick. First on her dance card: Vermin!
- MARVEL UNITED A PRIDE SPECIAL #1 - Marvel's annual Pride anthology returns, with LGBTQ+ characters and creators, including Al Ewing, Anthony Oliveira, Wyatt Kennedy, Zoe Tunnell, Bayleigh Underwood, Federica Mancin and Kei Zama.
- AVENGERS ACADEMY ASSEMBLE #1 - Reprinting the Marvel Infinity stories by Anthony Oliveira, Carola Borelli and Bailie Rosenlund. Captain Marvel assembles a new teen superteam who right away have to take on the threat of a new Sinister Six.
- GIANT SIZE DARK PHOENIX SAGA #1 - The next chapter in Ms Marvel's time-hopping X-adventures as she battles with Legion. We're off to the Dark Phoenix Saga with Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Rod Reis.
- MARVEL RIVALS IGNITE #1 - Another one-shot tying into the mega-popular team battle game, this time written and drawn by Peach Momoko!
Phew, done! See you next time!
Andrew.
