Couple of events this week: first up this Wednesday, 7-9pm, is Reads, the graphic novel reading group. This month the group is diving into Arcana The Lost Heirs, by Sam Prentice-Jones, and all are welcome to join in the discussion! Details here.

Then on Thursday, 7-9pm, we have a launch party for Eliza Fricker's new memoir, Could Try Harder. Come along to pick up a signed copy of what looks to be an excellent graphic novel about the difficulties of growing up with undiagnosed autism. Details here.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN BRAND NEW DAY #1 - For many, the Brand New Day era of Spider-Man stands as one of the best runs on the character, with a revolving group of writers and artists who had the time to craft some truly memorable stories. That Mark Waid / Marcos Martin two-parter with the Shocker where they're trapped in the subway? That's some good comics! Anyway, Dan Slott was one of those writers, and he's returning to that era with artist Marcus To as Spidey nicks a directory of the Kingpin's "business" dealings, one wanted by the likes of Mr Negative and the Punisher.

  • BARBARA GORDON BREAKOUT #1 - Mariko Tamaki and Amancay Nahuelpan throw Barbara Gordon in the slammer! Well, actually it's new GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage who locks her up for being the nerve centre of the Bat-family. Now she needs to learn to survive in an environment where plenty of people have an axe to grind with Bat-folk (including the guards).

  • DESTINATION KILL #1 - British creator Joe Palmer unleashes his visual style on a series that shows its roots in the worlds of Tank Girl and Judge Dredd, full of over the top action and cutting, satirical humour. In a future where humans have been fully served and fully displaced by robots, a disgruntled uprising foils ace cop Gina Serene's holiday plans and forces her to work with her ex-partner, P.I. Lance Wingman.

  • HIDDEN SPRINGS #1 - This new mini from Rob Williams and Nil Vendrell sounds like fun. A group of aging film stars go on a field trip with their retirement home, only to discover a baby kaiju who might just cause the end of the world if he's not allowed to return to the sea. But the military have other ideas, and the group risk it all to help their new pal.

  • FROM PARTS UNKNOWN #1 - Two luchadore brothers (and tag team partners) find themselves fighting for their lives when they enlist in an out of the way match-up where the stakes are very real. Wrasslin' action from Adriano Ariganello and Daniel Caval.

  • INNARDS #1 - Speaking of innards, Rob Guillory and Sam Lotfi's new title sees its protagonists descending into the depths of the Earth to obtain Lucifium, a valuable energy source for a planet that has been devastated by nuclear war. But something's going terribly wrong with the mining crew as terrible secrets are revealed. Lucifium, eh? I think I see where this is going...

  • SHOWDOWN #1 - A thriller about family, revenge, and learning lessons the hard way, as a woman returns to her hometown intent on killing the man responsible for her brother's death. Brought to you by Dave Wielgosz and Tadd Galusha.

And that's it! I'm on a 34 hour jaunt to NZ from tomorrow, but through the predictive powers of the internet I'll still be hard-selling...err...recommending titles to you next week. And then I'll be back, jet-lagged to hell, for the Bank Holiday week at the end of the month!

Ka kite anō koutou!

Andrew.
