The Gosh! Authority 21.06.23
Hello!
Nothing on the events slate for this week, but if we cast our minds forward to the far distant future of Friday 30th June, then we've got the awesome Isabel Greenberg here from 7-9pm for the launch of her excellent new childrens book, The Midnight Babies! Get all the details here.
We've had some issues with our internet since late last week, so apologies if we're a little tardy responding to emails at the moment (in writing this from home). Hopefully it should all be resolved in the next day or so.
Got a corker to start the comics this week....
HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
- ULTIMATE INVASION #1 - Jonathan Hickman returns to reboot the Ultimate Universe! Feels like a long time since we've seen anything substantial from Hickman (he's been busy with his Substack, I assume), so this is pretty exciting, one of two new projects for Marvel this year. And not just Hickman: Bryan Hitch is also on board, marking a return to the Ultimate Universe for him. Looks like the Maker is behind whatever kicks everything off, with the Illuminati reforming to stop him.
- WILDS END #1 - A very welcome return to an often overlooked book. Never fear if you've not read the previous volumes, all you need to know is that the Earth has been invaded by Martians (ala H.G. Wells), and our anthropomorphized heroes are all at sea in a now unfamiliar world. The high concept pitch for this series was always "War of the Worlds meets Wind in the Willows", and that's bang on. It helps that the talent behind it is Dan Abnett and Ian Culbard, with Nik Abnett also pitching in on this one. And if you haven't read the earlier stuff, then do yourself a favour and grab the collections.
- INCREDIBLE HULK #1 - After the divisive antics of Starship Hulk, we're back to basics in this new series by Phillip Kennedy Johnson & Nic Klein. Expect some serious slugfests, as the Hulk takes on the monsters of the Marvel Universe who are attempting to free their primordial mother.
- BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS TENEMENT #1 - The latest installment of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino's linked horror universe. This time we're going with some tower block horrors as we delve into the shared secrets of seven tenement building residents. Obviously I'd normally pop this at the top, but I'm guessing you're already on board with Bone Orchard or not!
- TALES OF SYZPENSE #1 - A new anthology masterminded by T.P. Louise and Ashley Wood, with each issue featuring two stories: one by Louise and Wood, and another by a guest creative team. This issue the other tale comes from Chris Ryall and Nelson Daniel.
- XINO #1 - And speaking of anthologies, here's another from Oni, focusing on weird sci-fi with a line-up this issue including Melissa Flores, Daniel Irizarri, Christopher Condon, Nick Cagnetti, Jordan Thomas, Shaky Kane & Phil Hester!
- WONDER WOMAN #800 - The final issue of the current run of WW, with a wrap to the current storyline, and a backup tale by the creative team of the upcoming relaunch, Tom King and Daniel Sampere!
And that's that!
