Suzanne: The Jazz Age Goddess of Tennis - Launch Party with Tom Humberstone!

Tom Humberstone, the award winning comic artist, is launching his brand new graphic novel, Suzanne, published by Avery Hill. We will be welcoming Tom to the store to celebrate its release on Thursday 1st September, 7-9pm.

Tom was the editor and publisher of legendary UK small press anthology Solipsistic Pop, and his breathtaking artwork and vibrant colours have been featured in the likes of Phonogram, The New Statesman and The Nib.

Suzanne: The Jazz Age Goddess of Tennis, is the captivating story about Suzanne Lenglen, the French tennis player that revolutionised the sport, both on and off the court. Here’s what the publisher has to say about it:

The incredible story of Suzanne Lenglen, a woman who changed the face of sport and society in the trailblazing Jazz Age, but who few even remember.

One of the greatest tennis players the world has ever seen was a woman few even remember. A championship player by the age of fifteen in a Europe overshadowed by impending war, Suzanne Lenglen broke records for ticket sales and match winning streaks, scandalised and entranced the public with her playing outfits, and became a pioneer, making friends and enemies throughout restrictive tennis society in the trailblazing Jazz Age.

With stunning art and an astute eye, Suzanne explores how a figure both enormously influential and too-often overlooked battled her father’s ambition, bias in sporting journalism, and her own divisive personality, to forge a new path — and to change sport forever.

Tom will be joining us for the launch party on Thursday 1st September, 7-9pm. Be sure to come down to the shop to celebrate with us all!

While stocks last, our copies of Suzane come with a beautiful Gosh! exclusive bookplate signed by Tom Humberstone. If you’d like a copy of Suzanne, but are unable to make it to the launch party, then you’ll be able to pre-order a signed bookplate edition right here on our web store, available both for mail order and collection.
