The Gosh! Authority 29.06.22

Hello!

We're very happy to be hosting an event we announced this week: the one and only Paul Hudson, a legendary mainstay of UK comics retail and ex-proprietor of Comics Showcase (and indeed the man who gave Gosh founder Josh his first job in comics) will be here Saturday 30th July, 1-2pm to sign his new book The A-Z of British Newspaper Strips! We know there's a lot of you ex-Showcase customers out there, so come on down and support Paul for the release of this wonderful chronicle of British strip history. All the details here.

Okay, what have we got for you this summery Previews week?

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • VARIANTS #1 - A stealth Jessica Jones story by Gail Simone and Phil Noto! Why it's not just called Jessica Jones: Variants is a puzzle, especially given the muddy search results when searching for "variants comic" these days. Anyhoo, in the course of a regular-seeming case, Jessica begins encountering multiversal versions of herself. What can it all mean? Who knows, but what I do know is that Simone writing JJ definitely gets me in the door.

  • SINS OF THE BLACK FLAMINGO #1 - A hedonistic outlaw finds something to believe in other than himself in this new series by Gosh fave (and ex-Gosh regular) Andrew Wheeler and artist Travis Moore. Set in an occult-drenched version of Miami, our lead is Sebastian Harlow - aka The Black Flamingo - a flamboyant thief who targets the magical underworld. Looks promising!

  • HELLBOY & THE BPRD OLD MAN WHITTIER #1 - Lovely to see the lush artwork of Gabriel Hernández Walta anywhere, but he's a perfect fit for the world of Hellboy. This story, written by Mike Mignola, is a sequel to the classic 8-page tale The Whittier Legacy. Hellboy goes to the assistance of Catherine Whittier, who has inherited the ancestral pile. A home that comes with plenty of supernatural baggage.

  • IRON CAT #1 - The Iron Cat armour is back in this new mini-series by Jed MacKay & Pere Perez, but it's not Felicia Hardy! Felicia teams up with Tony Stark to get to the bottom of why the armour has reappeared, and solve the mystery of who exactly is piloting it.

  • DC VS VAMPIRES KILLERS #1 - Harley Quinn survives the vampire-infested DCU in this one-shot by Matthew Rosenberg and Mike Bowden that spins out of the hit series. Harley has been surviving by looking out for number one, but she's just discovered a secret that might transform her into the hero that saves humankind.

  • THOR LIGHTNING AND LAMENT #1 - The Ralph Macchio / Todd Nauck throwback train keeps chugging on, with another one-shot tale of a classic Marvel hero set outside of any current continuity. These are generally solid little one-shots that capture the essence of the character's appeal, and this one is a perfect example: Thor, Loki, Asgard, Sif and a bunch of pesky trolls.

And that's it for this week folks! See you next time!

Andrew.
