The Gosh! Authority 30.11.22

Hello!

Jump on that sled right down the hill to Christmas, as we're now only about 3 1/2 weeks away! And as a part of that celebration, we're pleased to have (at last) announced our Gosh! Best of 2022 lists, both Adult and Kids! If you're looking for GN shopping ideas, look no further than these lists of titles we've all picked out as our favourite books of the year. It's quite a spread of genres and styles, so there should be something for everyone. Kids hereAdults here. Dig in!

Or just read on for the highlights from this week's batch of new goodies....

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

  • AVENGERS ASSEMBLE ALPHA #1 - The next big Avengers storyline kicks off here thanks to Jason Aaron, Andrew Currie and Bryan Hitch, bringing Aaron's Avengers run to a close. Crossing through Avengers and Avengers Forever (with Avengers 1,000,000 BC along for the ride), the story brings a multiversal (multitemporal?) army of Avengers together to battle an equally impressive army of baddies. All that, and the decency to only throw in a couple of one-shots beyond the main series to get the whole story!

  • JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #1 - Johns is on a roll, resurrecting his beloved Justice Society with fan fave Mikel Janin as a part of his New Golden Age initiative. The JSA are embroiled in some time-jumping shenanigans (everyone's doing it) thanks to the Time Masters as an unknown enemy attacks the group throughout their timeline.

  • SUPERMAN KAL-EL RETURNS SPECIAL #1 - Kal-El is back from his freedom fighting stint on Warworld in this one-shot that sets things up for the new-era defining Action Comics #1050. Supes takes a tour around his old buddies (and enemies) to let them know he's back in this anthology by a host of different creators.

  • BLUE BEETLE GRADUATION DAY #1 - Choosing the best Blue Beetle is tough, because although Ted is of course the gold standard, Jamie Reyes, first seen in Infinite Crisis back in 2006, is a contemporary-feeling character with the potential to become DC's version of Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen, something which may well happen when his solo movie hits next year. Trouble is, he never seems to stick in comics, but it's always nice to see him rolled out for a mini every now and then, as is the case here, by Josh Trujillo & Adrian Gutierrez.

  • PETER PARKER & MILES MORALES SPIDER-MEN DOUBLE TROUBLE #1 - Peter & Miles get the younger reader "Double Trouble" treatment by Mariko Tamaki, Vita Ayala and Gurihiru. Pete takes Miles for a "Bring Your Sidekick to Work Day", much to Miles' chagrin, but it's up to the younger Spider-Man to save the day when Peter inadvertently unleashes some super-villainous peril.

  • PLANET HULK WORLDBREAKER #1 - Greg Pak and Manuel Garcia take us back to Sakaar, but journey forward 1000 years where a woman looks for the Skaarson to save the world from an apocalyptic cult, but might only find one who would break the world instead. I have to admit, I'm rather out of the loop on where all the Planet Hulk mythos lies now, but I do have fond memories of its early phases so I might just have to jump in on this one.

  • NUBIA & THE JUSTICE LEAGUE SPECIAL #1 - Not just the Queen of the Amazons now, Nubia joins the Justice League in this 50th anniversary one-shot by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, Stephanie Williams, Alitha Martinez & Amancay Nahuelpan.

  • KOSHCHEI IN HELL #1 - Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck take us back to Hell where Russian immortal Koschei the Deathless - last seen relating his life story to Hellboy - is settled into his Hellish way of life. That is until an old foe comes on the scene, forcing Koschei to pick up his sword once more. I guess that's the thing about Hell. You're never going to see someone you want to see there, right?

  • WILDSTORM 30TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 - It's been 30 years since Jim Lee put on his big boy pants and started Image comics with the brightest burning talent of the 90s. 30 years since the beginning of WildCATS, and the Wildstorm Universe.  It's also, incredibly, been 24 years since he sold Wildstorm to DC, but that's a whole other drama. Because this here is a celebration of the formation of the Wildstorm Universe, now embedded firmly within the DCU. 100 pages of shorts, tipping its hat to the past and looking ahead to the future, where mainstay Wildstorm characters like Grifter and appear in...

  • DC’S GRIFTER GOT RUN OVER BY A REINDEER #1 - The DC Comics Holiday Special, here again with a fun moniker and - as usual - a surprisingly decent line-up of creators. Superman and Wonder Woman, Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Harley Quinn, Hawkman and Hawkwoman, Black Canary and John Constantine, Batman, and Animal Man all get into the holiday spirit in this 80 page giant.

  • PLUSH #1 - Plastic and Vinyl creators Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard are up to their old shocking tricks, joined by artistic collaborator Rico Renzi. A man stumbles on a group of furries at a convention feasting on human flesh. Bad luck, because now it looks like they want a piece of him.

And that's it from me! See you next time pals!
